Here you won’t feel like you’re constantly bumping shoulders with other tourists like on Zanzibar, even though Mafia lies just 160 km south of Zanzibar. But the beaches aren't as appealing on Mafia as the beaches on Zanzibar. Mafia remains virtually unknown to the main tourist crowds, so the reefs are truly a sport diver's paradise offering a staggeringly beautiful and varied display of marine life. And each year between November and April you have an excellent chance of seeing whale sharks here.

Generally the long dry season, when rainfall is fairly unusual, lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October. The main rainy season, or the 'long rains', last during March, April and May. During November and December there's another rainy season: the 'short rains'. These are much lighter than the main rains and less reliable.

So generally speaking the best season would be from June to October.

First you will have to get to Dar Es Salaam Airport (Airport code DAR). Once in Dar es Salaam a 30 minute plane trip with Coastal Aviation Tanzania (www.coastal.co.tz) will take you to Mafia. Or you can also reach Mafia Island from Zanzibar Island also with Coastal Aviation Tanzania.
